Plenty Gorge MTB conducts regular social rides throughout the Plenty Gorge Park. For the most up to date info check our Facebook page here.
On Tuesday nights:
Throughout winter we only run the South Side ride, however will cater for experienced but slow riders as well as those who are comfortable at a quicker pace. During the summer months we aim to host a north side water tank ride as well, depending on numbers.
Advanced Ride:
Starting on the South side near Queens Gardens as usual from 6:30 until about 9. Expect a friendly 20km. Lights essential. We may split into 2 groups to suit rider skill levels dependent on numbers.
Beginners Ride (Summer Only):
For an easier ride join us at the water tank off Goldsworth lane. The Pace is set to suit the slowest rider and we will loop back past the car park during the ride to allow people to ride for as long as they feel comfortable.
Weekend rides:
Every third Sunday of the month
Hosted on a Sunday from the Yellow Gum Picnic area two rides will be available to cater to riders of all abilities. Over Summer rides start at 9.00 a.m. while during the cooler months rides start at 10 a.m, they will run between 1 and a half hours up to 3 hours depending on ability and demand. Check the club Facebook page for more event details. Please arrive about 10min early to ensure we’re ready to go.
Throughout the warmer months we will also run a BBQ after the ride for some much needed nourishment.
Parking, toilets and water all available at Yellow Gum Park.
We have an emergency contact form online at http://bit.do/pgmtbice. We ask that riders submit it before coming on their next ride. You can do it while putting on your shoes at the car even!
Hi, can kids (ages 7 & 9) come on the Sunday rides? They are both proficient riders……
Hi Garry,
They sure can! We try our best to provide for all riders. They should be fine on the beginners ride. We only ask that a guardian come along and that they are MTBA insured, whether by membership, day license or on a trial basis.
Is bicycle Victoria insurance ok. That covers for all off road non competitive riding.
Shane, First apologises for the delayed response. Unfortunately no Bicycle Vic insurance is not the same as MTBA insurance.
As the Land Owner, Parks Victoria has requested that they only deal with one representative body of mountain bikers, that group has some sort of formulised structure and is affiliated with the national peck body of MTBer’s, that being MTBA.
To keep everything as tidy as we can we request that to participate in an “organised” club ride everyone has MTBA membership or a day licence
Hi, for someone coming along for the first time – I ride a bit, but I’m no expert (and I’m a bit out of shape!). Which group would suit me? How advanced is “advanced”?
Hi Dave, If you are “a bit out of shape” i would recommend the northside “beginners ride” The trails the 2 groups ride are mostly the same, we just go slower, Don’t be put off by the beginners tag these are still fast technical trails
Is April 16th still a goer, as it is in the middle of Easter holidays?
I am only a summer cyclist and cycle at the gym in the winter. These days I only like cycling along bike tracks/trails and do not have anybody to cycle with. Are you able to cater for me.
Regards, Janice
Hi Janice,
The trails in Plenty Gorge Park are very much mountain bike trails. While there are some easier and some more difficult all are a step above a bike path ride.
I am not 100% sure if that’s what you mention by bike tracks/trails but if it is then please come along to one of our social rides, either the beginner Tuesday Night Ride or one of our Sunday social rides.
If you are looking for a group to ride on shared use paths with might I suggest one of the BUG groups, either Banyule or Nillumbik B.U.G. Information can be found for Banyule B.U.G here: http://www.banyulebug.org.au/index.html
I hope that answers your question!

Hi Shane,
No charge on any of our social rides! Just a smile at the end
Sorry about the delay in replying Shane, all of our rides are free.
HI There – I am responding to the facebook post regarding the social ride on April 28th. I see that date is not on this page. could you please confirm that it is on. (I have filled out a registration page for myself and my two kids – Also are we in the cooler months now – i.e. is the starting time 10 am.
thanks.
Hi Russell,
The website gets missed when updating unfortunately. The ride will be on tomorrow from 9am.
Thanks
Do the beginner rides run through when it’s not daylight savings? Will I get taught how to do the correct techniques and skills and difficult parts of the trail.
Hi Cameron,
We typically “guide” the ride as none of the volunteers are qualified coaches. The beginner rides are only on Sunday’s through the winter, but we do cater for an experienced but slower group on Tuesdays depending on who attends. We can definitely go over technique and line choice for difficult sections, just let the rider leaders know you’d like to and they can make sure you’re taken care of.
Thanks, Sean.
